How does Norton 360 support SSD devices?
Norton 360 does not perform traditional disk defragmentation on SSDs.
On Windows systems, Norton relies on Windows’ built-in drive optimization tools rather than using its own defragmentation engine. Windows automatically detects whether a drive is an SSD or a traditional hard disk and applies the correct optimization method.
For SSD drives, Windows uses TRIM, not classic defragmentation.
Will Norton 360 defragment my SSD?
No. Traditional defragmentation is not used on SSDs, because it’s unnecessary and can shorten drive lifespan.
When Norton initiates or schedules disk optimization, Windows handles the process. If the drive is an SSD, Windows performs a TRIM operation, which helps the SSD manage unused data blocks efficiently without physically rearranging files.
In short:
- HDD → Windows may defragment
- SSD → Windows uses TRIM
Norton does not override this behavior.
Why does Windows still show “Optimize” for SSDs?
The term “Optimize” is a general label used by Windows for all drive types. For SSDs, this does not mean defragmentation in the traditional sense.
Occasionally, Windows may perform a very limited metadata consolidation on SSDs for system stability reasons, but this is rare, controlled by Windows itself, and safe for modern SSDs.
Can I stop SSD optimization?
In most cases, there’s no need to disable optimization for SSDs. TRIM is a normal, recommended maintenance operation and does not harm SSDs.
However, if you prefer full manual control, you can manage drive optimization directly through Windows settings. Disabling Norton’s cleanup or optimization features does not force Windows to defragment an SSD.
Bottom line
- Norton 360 does not defragment SSDs
- Windows automatically applies TRIM instead of defragmentation
- Norton relies on Windows’ native optimization logic
- SSD health and lifespan are not negatively affected
This behavior is standard for modern Windows systems and aligns with current best practices for SSD maintenance.
After all, the service can be disabled and run manually if you have regular drives that require periodical defragmentation service.
Here is how to stop the defragmentation process:
- Go to Settings > Features Tab > Performance
- Optimize Disk > Settings Tab > Automatically optimize drives on this PC – Click to Turn Off
