If someone else gets the phone, protecting those accounts can become just as important as getting the device back.

If your phone is lost or stolen, your first priorities are simple: try to locate it, lock it remotely, protect your mobile number, and secure your most important accounts.

How urgently you need to act depends on what happened. A phone left under a restaurant table is a different situation from one taken from your hand. A locked phone is also very different from a stolen phone whose passcode someone may have seen.

This guide explains what to do if your phone is lost or stolen, including specific steps for iPhone and Android devices, when to contact your carrier, when to erase the phone, and how to protect yourself from scams afterward.

What to Do First If Your Phone Is Lost or Stolen

If you have just noticed that your phone is missing, start with the easiest possibilities before assuming it was stolen.

1. Call or ping the phone

Call your number from another phone.

If you have a smartwatch or another connected device, use its find phone feature. If the phone is nearby, a sound may be enough to locate it.

Apple’s Find My and Google’s Find Hub can also play a sound on supported devices.

2. Check the phone’s location

For an iPhone, use Find My from another Apple device or Apple’s Find Devices service.

For Android, use Google Find Hub, formerly known as Find My Device.

These services may show the device’s current or most recent location, depending on the phone, its settings, battery, and network availability. Google’s current Find Hub can use encrypted recent locations and its wider finding network to help locate supported Android devices.

3. Lock the phone

If you cannot retrieve it immediately, lock it remotely.

You can also display contact information so an honest finder has a way to reach you without opening the phone.

4. Do not confront a suspected thief

If the map shows the phone at an unfamiliar house, parking lot, or other location, do not try to recover it by confronting someone yourself.

Save the location information and give it to police if appropriate.

5. Contact your mobile carrier if theft looks likely

Your carrier can help protect your mobile number and may be able to suspend the line or block the device.

6. Start protecting important accounts

If you believe someone could unlock the phone, move quickly to secure email, banking, Apple or Google accounts, and other sensitive services.

Situation

First step

Phone may be nearby

Play a sound or call it

Phone is missing

Check its location

Phone appears stolen

Lock it and contact your carrier

Thief may know the passcode

Secure important accounts immediately

Recovery looks unlikely

Consider remote erase

How to Find and Lock a Lost iPhone

If you need to find a lost iPhone, start with Find My.

On another Apple device signed in to your Apple Account, open Find My and select the missing iPhone.

You can also use Apple’s Find Devices service through a web browser.

Depending on the circumstances, you may be able to:

view the phone’s location

play a sound

mark the iPhone as lost

display contact information

remotely erase the device

If the iPhone is missing, mark it as lost as soon as practical.

Lost Mode locks the device and lets you display a message or contact number on the Lock Screen. This gives someone who finds the phone a way to return it without getting access to your data.

Find My must have been enabled before the device disappeared for remote finding features to work.

If you believe the iPhone was stolen, be especially careful about messages you receive afterward.

A thief may send a fake text or email claiming that your iPhone has been found. The message may direct you to a fake Apple sign-in page or ask you to remove the phone from your Apple Account.

Do not share your passcode, Apple Account password, or verification codes with anyone who contacts you about the missing phone.

And do not remove a stolen iPhone from Find My just because someone asks you to.

Activation Lock is designed to make a lost or stolen iPhone harder for someone else to reactivate, and it remains active even after a supported device is remotely erased.

How to Find and Lock a Lost Android Phone

If you have a lost Android phone, use Google Find Hub.

Many people still know this service by its old name, Find My Device. Google now calls it Find Hub.

You can access Find Hub from another Android device or through a web browser.

Depending on the phone and its settings, Find Hub can help you:

locate the device

play a sound

secure it

see recent location information

erase the phone if necessary

Google says Find Hub is automatically turned on when a Google Account is added to a supported Android device. Its finding network can also use encrypted location information from nearby Android devices to help locate missing devices.

Some Android devices also support Remote Lock.

When this feature has been enabled beforehand, you may be able to lock the phone through Google’s Remote Lock service using your verified phone number. Afterward, you can use Find Hub for additional recovery or erase options.

If the location shows somewhere you recognize, you may simply have left the phone behind.

If it shows an unfamiliar location and you believe it was stolen, do not go there to confront someone. Lock the phone, save the location information, and move on to protecting your carrier account and important online accounts.

Contact Your Mobile Carrier and Protect Your SIM or eSIM

A lost or stolen phone can also put your mobile number at risk.

That matters because many services still use text messages and phone calls for:

login verification

password resets

fraud alerts

banking authentication

account recovery

Once you believe your phone was stolen or is unlikely to be recovered quickly, contact your mobile carrier.

Use the carrier’s official app, website, or a support number you independently know is legitimate.

Ask what options are available for:

suspending service

replacing the SIM or eSIM

moving your number to a replacement device

blocking the missing handset

preventing unauthorized SIM or number transfers

Do not rely on a phone number sent to you in an unexpected text or email after the theft.

If someone has the physical phone and also knows your screen passcode, protecting the mobile number becomes even more important.

Secure Your Most Important Accounts

If your phone was strongly protected with a passcode or biometrics, you may have some time to work through account security carefully.

If you think the thief knows the passcode, act much faster.

1. Protect your email first

Email should usually be near the top of your list.

Your email account can often be used to reset passwords for banking, shopping, social media, cloud storage, and many other accounts.

Change the email password if necessary, review logged-in devices, and look for unfamiliar recovery information or sessions.

2. Review your Apple or Google account

Check the security settings for the account connected to your phone.

Look for:

unfamiliar devices

unexpected sign-ins

changed recovery details

unknown authentication methods

security alerts you do not recognize

Do not remove the missing device from your account if doing so would disable useful tracking or theft-protection features.

3. Check banking and payment services

If the phone contained banking apps, review recent account activity.

Contact your bank if you notice anything suspicious or if you have reason to believe someone gained access.

Also review mobile payment services and stored cards.

4. Secure your password manager

If you use a password manager on the phone, make sure its main account remains secure.

A well-configured password manager should still require authentication, but the account deserves extra attention if someone may know the phone’s passcode.

5. Review messaging and social accounts

Check services such as messaging apps and social media for unfamiliar sessions.

Sign out the missing phone remotely where the service allows it.

6. Tell your employer or school if necessary

If the phone contained work email, VPN access, company authentication apps, or school systems, notify the appropriate IT team.

They may be able to revoke the phone’s access remotely.

What If the Thief Knows Your Phone Passcode?

A stolen phone becomes a much more serious account-security problem when the thief also knows the passcode.

Someone may have watched you enter it before taking the device, or you may have used a simple code that is easy to guess.

In that situation, prioritize:

your primary email account

Apple or Google account security

banking and payment apps

password manager access

mobile carrier account

authentication apps

social and messaging accounts

Review account recovery information and active sessions.

On supported iPhones, Stolen Device Protection is specifically designed for situations where someone steals the iPhone and knows its passcode.

When enabled, Apple requires Face ID or Touch ID for certain sensitive actions without offering the passcode as a fallback. Some especially sensitive changes can also require an additional security delay.

Android also provides theft-protection features on supported devices, including options such as Remote Lock.

These features work best when you turn them on before anything goes wrong.

Should You Remotely Erase a Lost or Stolen Phone?

Remote erase is powerful, but it should not always be the first button you press.

Start by locating and locking the phone.

If there is a realistic chance of getting it back, keeping the device in lost mode may be more useful while you continue tracking it.

Consider remote erase when:

theft is confirmed

recovery appears unlikely

the phone contains particularly sensitive information

you are more concerned about protecting the data than continuing recovery attempts

The effect of erasing differs between platforms.

On Android, Google warns that after a factory reset, the phone will no longer be available in Find Hub.

For supported Apple devices, Activation Lock remains on after a remote erase. Apple also says newer supported devices can still retain some Find My functionality after being erased.

Whatever platform you use, read the warning on the screen before confirming an erase.

The simple rule is:

Lock first. Erase when protecting the data becomes more important than continuing to track the phone.

Watch for Scams After Your Phone Is Stolen

A stolen-phone incident can lead to a second problem: phishing.

Someone who has your device may know your name, phone number, carrier, or other information.

You could receive messages such as:

“Your iPhone has been found.”

“Sign in to see your device’s location.”

“Your lost phone was recovered.”

“Remove the device from your account.”

“Verify your identity to unlock your phone.”

“Enter the code we just sent you.”

Treat these messages with suspicion.

Do not enter your Apple, Google, email, or banking password through a link sent by someone claiming to have found the device.

Do not provide verification codes.

And do not remove theft protections because someone threatens you or claims the device cannot be returned otherwise.

Instead, open the official Find My or Find Hub service yourself.

If you accidentally enter account information into one of these fake pages, treat it as a phishing incident and change the affected credentials immediately.

Report a Stolen Phone

If the phone was stolen rather than misplaced, consider filing a police report.

A report may be useful for:

insurance claims

carrier records

documenting the theft

providing location information without confronting a thief yourself

Your carrier may also ask for information about the device.

Useful details include:

phone make and model

serial number

IMEI number

approximate time and place it disappeared

screenshots of its location

insurance information

carrier case number

It is a good idea to keep your phone’s serial number and IMEI somewhere other than the phone itself.

If the device belongs to an employer or school, report it there too.

If You Get the Phone Back

Getting the phone back does not always mean the incident is over.

If it was simply under a couch or left at a friend’s house, there may be nothing more to do.

But if the device was outside your control for a significant amount of time, inspect it before returning to normal use.

Start by changing the screen passcode.

Then review:

Apple or Google account activity

email sessions

installed apps

browser activity

payment methods

security alerts

mobile carrier settings

authentication methods

On Android, look for apps you did not install or permissions you do not recognize.

Install any available operating-system and app updates.

If you remotely locked the phone or enabled Lost Mode, turn that feature off only after you have the device safely back.

If anything about the phone or your accounts looks wrong, change important passwords and investigate further.

How to Prepare Before Your Phone Goes passcode significantly improves protection, especially when combined with modern device security.

However, no protection should be treated as absolute.

The risk increases if someone knows or has observed the passcode.

That is why features such as Apple’s Stolen Device Protection and Android theft-protection tools can provide useful additional layers.

Should I erase a stolen phone immediately?

Usually, try locating and locking it first.

Remote erase makes more sense when recovery appears unlikely or the data on the device is more important than continuing to track it.

Read the platform’s warning carefully before confirming an erase because it may affect future tracking.

Can a thief use my SIM or eSIM?

Potentially, which is why your carrier should be part of your response to a stolen phone.

Ask the carrier about suspending the line, replacing the SIM or eSIM, and protecting the account against unauthorized number transfers.

Should I remove a stolen iPhone from my Apple Account?

Usually, you should be very cautious about doing this while you are still trying to recover the phone.

Removing theft protections can make it easier for someone else to use or resell the device.

Keep the iPhone associated with your account while you are using Find My and Activation Lock unless Apple, your insurer, or another legitimate recovery process specifically requires a different step.

What if I never turned on Find My or Find Hub?

You may not be able to locate or remotely manage the phone through those services.

Focus instead on:

contacting your carrier

protecting email

securing banking accounts

reviewing your Apple or Google account

changing critical passwords

reporting the theft

watching for suspicious activity

Then make sure device-finding features are enabled when you set up your replacement phone.

A Lost Phone Is an Account Security Problem Too

A lost or stolen phone is more than a missing piece of hardware.

It may also provide access to email, payment information, authentication codes, personal messages, photos, cloud accounts, and password recovery tools.

That is why the response should follow a clear order:

locate the phone, lock it, protect your mobile number, secure important accounts, and erase the device if necessary.

If the phone was only misplaced, you may have it back within minutes.

If it was stolen, the same tools can help make the device much less useful to whoever has it.

Preparation matters too. Turn on Find My or Find Hub now, use a strong passcode, enable available theft-protection features, keep backups current, and make sure you have another way to access important accounts.

The faster you lock down both the device and the accounts connected to it, the less useful a lost or stolen phone becomes to someone else.

Losing a phone is no longer just about replacing an expensive device.
