It works by exploiting known <a href=\"\/security-center\/vulnerabilities.html\">vulnerabilities<\/a> in outdated browser plugins like Flash, Java, or Silverlight. When a user visits a compromised or <a href=\"\/faq\/art\/what-are-malicious-websites\/\">malicious website<\/a>, the kit scans for these weaknesses and, if found, silently installs malware\u2014often <a href=\"\/security-center\/ransomware.html\">ransomware<\/a>, <a href=\"\/security-center\/trojans.html\">trojans<\/a>, or information stealers\u2014without the user\u2019s knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>RIG has been active since around 2014 and is often used in <a href=\"\/faq\/art\/what-are-drive-by-downloads\/\">&#8220;drive-by download&#8221; attacks<\/a>, where simply visiting a site is enough to get infected. While its activity has declined in recent years due to better browser security and the decline of vulnerable plugins, it&#8217;s still used in targeted attacks.
